Educational occupancies generally can be defined as new or existing facilities in which six or more persons gather for the purpose of formal or structured instruction for more than 4 hours per day. Examples of educational occupancies are:
- Public Schools
- Private Schools
PLC has experience with these occupancies, which provide a unique mix of fire protection challenges because of the wide variety of uses in their buildings. These buildings contain occupancies ranging from computer labs to research labs to lecture theatres to recreational facilities; each with its own specific protection and life safety requirements.
PLC provides traditional engineering services such as code compliance reviews and fire protection system design for educational facilities. To provide acceptable fire safety in educational buildings, performance-based solutions are often required to address unique building designs and/or uses. PLC has also helped preserve historically important structures for continued use by demonstrating that current objectives for fire safety can be met.
